NEWS

My Apologies
The web site “Looking for Felons” (www.felonyspy.com) that appeared in the last newsletter is a hoax. When I first checked it out it looked like a legitimate website, but shortly after sending out the newsletter it added some suspicious content. There is a section called “Terms” that was not there when it was posted. I apologize for putting it in the newsletter.

Aged Tires
Be careful when you buy your next set of tires. Just because you bought them new does not mean they are new. They could have been sitting in a warehouse for years before they made their way to the retailer. There is a code on the tire that will tell you the date the tire was manufactured; the max length should be about six years, after that, things go bad in a hurry. If the tire has a 3 digit code it was made prior to 2000, which means it is at least 8 years old, which means don’t buy it. If it is on your vehicle take it off and buy new tires. If you have a SUV it can be worse, a combination of heavy load, high speed (60 MPH) and old tires is an accident looking for a place to happen. See the video

Safe Road Maps
A great web site sent to us by former student and good friend Anthony Gibson.  The website combines information from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System with Google Maps to give you a visual representation of traffic safety across the entire nation. With this site, you can enter your address or the executives address and view the roads that have the highest number of traffic fatalities in a specified area. You can do this along the route driven to work, or if you are traveling in an unfamiliar environment

Jihadist Tutorial on Urban Terrorism and the Kidnapping of Americans
A how to lesson plan for Jihadist that describes the criteria for selecting an American target. There are several factors they need to observe notice the third point.
1. Easy access
2. The target is a mature male
3. The target is isolated from security protection details
4. The target is physically weak and easy to subdue
5. The target does not maintain vigilance

A Look at Terrorist Behavior: How They Prepare, Where They Strike
A good look at how attacks are planned. Excellent charts and allot of data. What I found more interesting was the backup material. One of the research papers is titled “Pre-Incident Indicators of Terrorist Group Activities,” It may be a case of information overload - it is a 500 page document with many case studies and analysis of past terrorist attacks.

Have you Google Mapped your executive’s addresses using Google’s Street View?
The National Legal and Policy Center used the company's Street View technology to make public a detailed dossier on a "top Google executive." The dossier, which they posted on the internet, includes a photo of what appears to be the front gate and parking lot of the exec's opulent California manor, including the license plates of several luxury cars outside the home, the executive's landscaping company car and a photo showing the name of the neighbor's home-security company.

I’m not sure what you can do about it - but it would be interesting to Google earth you executive’s homes, go to street view –and take a look at what everyone else can look at.

NEW BOOKS

Racing in the Rain The Art of Racing in the Rain - By Garth Stein
I bought the book because it had the word “Racing” in the title. It’s not really about racing, but it ranks up there as one of the best books I have ever read, and I read allot. It is a book you will not forget.

Enzo, the narrator, is a dog who wants to be a man. It sounds kind of dumb – but this book will become a movie and a classic. Enzo is part of a happy family, until the wife of his owner, who is a racer, develops cancer and decides to move to her parent’s home along with his daughter. It is a great storyline mixing the combinations of tragedy and humor; it creates characters you will talk about for a long time.

If you like racing and love dogs you must read the book.

Security Drivers - Driving Ability and Age
Most corporate drivers are in their second career, which means they are up there in years. Therefore it's not surprising that a common question asked is “What happens to driving skills as age increases?" Speaking as a person that falls into that category (as age increases) I decided to look into what happens to our driving abilities. Read More...
Vehicle Dynamics Series - Braking
Most drivers realize that the higher the car's speed, the more distance required to stop. What is surprising to many drivers is how much additional distance it takes to stop a vehicle with just a small increase in speed. The fact is that if you double your speed you increase your stopping distance by a factor of four. Read more...
VEHICLE DYNAMICS BASICS
Vehicle dynamics, two words you tend to hear often, unfortunately most people don’t quite understand what the words mean and how it affects their day to day driving. As an example – I recently reviewed a solicitation for driver training from a military entity. They asked the bidders to include “vehicle dynamics exercises”. Well driving to the shopping mall, parking your car, parallel parking are all exercises in vehicle dynamics. Read the entire article here...
